Shoppers urged to return to Wellington Town Centre
Shoppers are being urged to go shopping in Wellington this Saturday 20th August to give a boost to Traders inconvenienced by last Saturdays's shutdown during a gathering of the English Defence League. Local resident, Paul Kalinauckas, a newly appointed member of Telford & Wrekin’s Co-operative Commission, has called for shoppers new and old to visit the town and show their support for the shopping centre. “Many people stayed away from Wellington on 13 August, fearing disorder and a number of shops closed for the day. We have a lovely indoor market to browse, plenty of character shops, eating establishments and coffee houses, which I hope shoppers will return to in their droves to enjoy. It would be particularly wonderful if people who hadn’t visited Wellington for some time, came to visit and enjoy a safe, community oriented shopping experience”.
Following Telford & Wrekin Council’s decision to become a Co-operative Council, it has set up a Co-operative Commission of local people to advise the council. Mr Kalinauckas added, “What better way to celebrate co-operation in the community than putting the day one of our town centres shut down behind us and showing solidarity with local traders. We even have live music in the Market Square from 11.00am organised by Wellington Heritage & Arts Alive” A social media campaign has also been organised by Mr Kalinauckas with aTweetup, a get together of local tweeters on Twitter planned for the day.
